The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, welcomes the victory of the Iraqi security forces backed by the International Coalition against Daech and congratulates the authorities and the people of the Republic of Iraq.   The takeover of Mosul is a major step in the campaign conducted since the summer of 2014 to stop and defeat Daech. France's thoughts today go to all those in Iraq who have sacrificed their lives to defend freedom in the face of terrorist horror: members of the Iraqi security forces, peshmergas, and volunteers. They also go to the civilian populations who have had to endure the yoke of Daech and the violence of the fighting. The President of the Republic sent a special message to French coalition forces, airmen, artillerymen, trainers and sailors who, thanks to their support of the Iraqi security forces and the peshmergas, have made possible the success of the operations carried out in Mosul since the autumn------------------------------ The International Coalition campaign is not over and the fight against Daech must be pursued with determination. The liberation of all Iraqi territory is under way, as is the destruction of Daech's strongholds in Syria, particularly in Raqqa and in the Euphrates Valley. France will maintain its military effort. The fight against terrorists will also continue with the utmost determination wherever they occur, including within the national territory.------------------------------------------------------------ In the aftermath of the resumption of Mosul, the challenges for Iraq are immense. Military as well as political, humanitarian or economic. Many questions still need to be decided by policy-makers and Iraqi society alike. The correctness of these choices will depend on the future of Iraq as well as the future of the region and the continuation of the fight against the terrorist threat. The President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, hopes that the victory of Mosul will open a new chapter in the history of this country and allow him to find peace, stability and unity. France will stand by its side. Source : Elysee
