USPA NEWS - At few weeks before the upcoming COP21 in Paris, Nicolas Hulot, special envoy for Hollande publishes recommendations on how to stop palm oil and forest fires in Indonesia causing wreaking havoc on biodiversity. In Indonesia, 2 million hectares which went up in smoke by releasing just under 1 GCO2eq.

PALM OIL AND FOREST FIRES HAVE TRAGIC CONSEQUENCES - TO BE DISCUSSED AT THE COP21--------------- What relativize the effects of national contributions registered so far to limit global warming to 2 ° C. What to do ?------------- In Indonesia, the extension of shifting cultivation of palm oil and the continuing drought have dramatic climate and health consequences. It means that around 2 million hectares of forests were converted to a monoculture which is also wreaking havoc on biodiversity, including the populations of orang-utans. Stricter measures must be taken urgently face a growing demand for palm oil. This is especially strengthen certification criteria for sustainable palm oil that do not offer sufficient guarantees today and support agricultural development in the agroforestry model.
