"The European Parliament strongly condemns the terrorist acts of Hamas, calls for a humanitarian pause and recalls that peace requires a two-state solution. The European Parliament debated during this session and has just adopted by a large majority today a resolution on the situation in the Middle East. The delegation of the social and ecological left supports this text, which is complete and balanced.
We unreservedly condemn the Hamas terrorist attack against Israelis. Hamas' crimes are despicable and must be punished. Killing civilians, children, raping women, torturing, taking hostages always and everywhere constitutes terrorism, never any act of resistance. We express our full solidarity with the Israeli people and the families of the victims. We support Israel's right to defend itself and affirm the need to put Hamas out of harm's way and release the hostages as quickly as possible." We publish the full tetxt of the statement released by the Delegation of the European Social Left, of European Parliament, 19 October 2023

We emphasize that these objectives must be pursued within the strict framework and in full respect of international law and humanitarian law. The indiscriminate bombing of civilian targets in the Gaza Strip and the complete blockade of the area and total cuts of water, electricity and gas constitute violations of humanitarian law. We cannot tolerate the collective punishment of the Gazans.
Israel's legitimate response against Hamas cannot justify the sacrifice of thousands of Palestinian civilian victims. We call for a humanitarian pause to spare innocent lives and encourage Tel Aviv to carry out a targeted offensive against terrorists and their relays.
While the population of Gaza is in absolute distress and a humanitarian catastrophe is emerging in this area, the European Parliament is calling for an increase in EU humanitarian aid and the opening of emergency corridors to transport this help.

Furthermore, stopping Hamas will only be possible by drastically drying up its financial and military resources. We know who the sponsors of this terrorist organization are: Iran and Qatar in the first place. The resolution we adopted today clearly calls for an investigation into the role of these Iranian and Qatari sponsors and condemns foreign support for Hamas. This must be a priority.
Finally, we reiterate our unchanged support for a negotiated solution providing for two free, viable and secure States. The European Union was built for peace. It has a decisive role to play in making this only viable solution possible and sustainable." Source: Delegation of the European Social Left, (October 19, 2023)
