The Goya Awards are rendered to the memory of Carlos Saura

USPA NEWS - The gala for the 37th Goya Awards for Spanish cinema, which was held this Saturday, February 11 in Seville, began with a tribute to the director Carlos Saura, who died 24 hours earlier at the age of 91 and who was to receive the Goya de Honor for all his career. His widow and two of his children went up on stage to remember him, thank him for the care he received during the last months of his life and read the speech he was going to give after receiving the honorary Goya. In that speech, Carlos Saura was grateful for having been able to dedicate himself to cinema and having been able to direct great actresses like Carmen Maura, who also took the stage to remember the deceased filmmaker.

The memory of Carlos Suara was hovering over the gala all night. The Goya Awards returned to Seville, four years after that 2019 in which the city turned to the celluloid industry. And again Seville complied. The gala, held at the Palace of Congresses and Exhibitions in the Andalusian capital, was attended by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez; several of his ministers, and the first regional and municipal authorities of Andalusia and Seville. Previously, all the nominees in the 28 award categories and the French actress Juliette Binoche, who received the International Goya for "her extraordinary career and her commitment to risky authors, embodied in a good number of unforgettable performances, had passed through the red carpet,” according to the Academy.

The great winner in this 37th edition of the Goya Awards was 'As Bestas'. The film was nominated in 17 categories, but only got nine awards. However, among them are Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Leading Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Score, Best Photography, Best Sound and Best Editing. Its most direct rival, 'Modelo 77', which aspired to 16 awards, only got five statuettes.
