Film director Carlos Saura dies at 91
A day before receiving the Goya of Honor
USPA NEWS -
Film director Carlos Saura, author of films such as "Ay, Carmela!", "Cría Cuervos" and "Deprisa, deprisa", among other works, passed away on the afternoon of Friday, February 10, 2023, just one day before that the Goya of Honor was awarded to him at the great festival of Spanish cinema that is being held this Saturday in Seville.
Carlos Saura suffered a fall last September and his state of health had worsened in recent weeks, until this Friday he died at home, surrounded by his family, the victim of pneumonia. Carlos Saura, one of the best Spanish film directors, was the author of many of the most remembered films in Spanish cinema. Fifty films, a Golden Bear in Berlin, a Jury Prize in Cannes, two Goyas, a few novels, thousands of photographs, seven children, four weddings... For that life dedicated to cinema, the Spanish Academy was going to present him with the Goya de Honor this Saturday at the gala held in Seville.
The Goya de Honor will be awarded to the Spanish director Carlos Saura, author of, among others, 'Cría Cuervos', 'Ay, Carmela!', 'Tango, no me dejes nunca', 'Deprisa, deprisa' and 'Elisa, vida mía'. Carlos Saura is one of the most important directors of Spanish cinema, Doctor Honoris Causa from the National Autonomous University of Mexico; Doctor Honoris Causa from the Bulgarian National Academy of Cinema and Theater Art; Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Dijon; Montreal Film Festival Best Director Award; and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival in 1981 for 'Deprisa, deprisa'.
"I never get bored. When I'm not shooting, I write, I take pictures, I paint...", he explained to the journalists when someone asked him what he did. "I live by and for the imagination. It is the imagination that unites us. Imagination travels faster than light itself", was his maxim since, at a very young age, he abandoned engineering studies to dedicate himself to cinema. This Friday, his flame went out forever, just a few hours before receiving the Goya of Honor for a lifetime dedicated to cinema.
