USPA NEWS - The U. S. Embassy is working to empower and inspire young, talented girls in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. The 2nd group of the Girls Can Code (GCC) participants in Addis Ababa will graduate on August 8, 2017 at American Center, National Archive and Library Agency (NALA). Former U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut, Leland Melvin, will deliver keynote remarks at the GCC Addis Ababa graduation ceremony and learn about the participants´ GCC projects.

Mr. Melvin will also give public lecture on “Chasing Dreams,“ about his two flights aboard the NASA space shuttle Atlantis and on the importance of STEM education. BIOGRAPHY IF ASTRONAUT LELAND MELVIN------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mr. Leland Melvin is a former U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut, who served as a mission specialist for two flights aboard the space shuttle Atlantis.  After hanging up his space boots, he was appointed as the head of NASA Education, and served as the co-chair of the White House´s Federal Coordination in STEM Education Task Force. Mr. Melvin was also the U.S. representative and chair of the International Space Education Board, a global collaboration on learning about space. Additionally, he is the only professional football player to ever travel to space.  He uses his life story as an athlete, astronaut, scientist, engineer, photographer, and musician to help inspire the next generation of explorers to pursue STEAM careers.  ABOUT GIRLS CAN CODE (GCC)-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The U.S. Embassy launched the Girls Can Code (GCC) project in 2016 aimed at empowering and inspiring young, talented Ethiopian girls to join STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields at the university level as well as to encourage them to pursue STEM careers and become future leaders in technology.  The U.S. Embassy expanded the Girls Can Code project in 2017 to four new cities, increasing number of students learning to code from 40 to 200.   With APO on behalf of U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
