USPA NEWS - The King of Spain, Felipe VI, and Queen Letizia, together with the Princess of Asturias, Leonor de Borbón, presided over, as every year, the solemn act of homage to the National Flag and the military parade that on this occasion took place in Madrid's Plaza de Neptuno on the occasion of the National Day of Spain.
After the arrival of the King and Queen and Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias, escorted by the Royal Escort Squadron, in a rainy Saturday, they were received by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the State authorities, members of the Government, presidents of the Spanish regions present at the event and authorities from the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of the Interior. The King and Queen and the Princess were then given honors by a battalion of the Royal Guard and the King, accompanied by the Chief of the Defense Staff, reviewed the formation.
The ceremony then began with three Royal Guards, representing each of the Armies, a Civil Guard and a National Policeman belonging to the Security Service of the House of the King, who carried the Flag, placing it in the place planned for its hoisting to the strains of the National Anthem.
Then, the Tribute was paid to those who gave their lives for Spain, for which the King and Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias, accompanied by the Head of the Military Quarter, went to the platform that houses the National Flag, where they placed the offering of the laurel wreath. At the sound of the prayer, a volley of rifle fire was fired by the “Plus Ultra” Squadron of the Royal Guard.
After the Tribute to those who gave their lives for Spain, the King and Queen and the Princess of Asturias attended the ground parade of units from the Army, Navy, Civil Guard, Military Emergency Unit, Royal Guard, State Security Forces and Corps and various Security, Civil Protection and Emergency Organizations.
After the military parade, the King and Queen and Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias travelled, escorted by the Royal Escort Squadron, to the Royal Palace in Madrid, where the traditional commemorative reception for the National Day took place.
In the Throne Room, King Felipe and Queen Letizia received the greetings of the attendees, belonging to the Powers of the State, the Government of the Nation, presidents of regions, political groups, Congress of Deputies, Senate, Constitutional Court, General Council of the Judiciary, Supreme Court, Council of State, Court of Auditors, Attorney General's Office and Ombudsman, as well as the rest of the attendees, from different social spheres of national public life. Once the greetings were finished, the reception began, which took place in the area of ??the Gala Dining Room and the Gasparini and Carlos III Rooms.
The commemoration of the National Day has the purpose of solemnly remembering moments of collective history that form part of the common historical, cultural and social heritage of Spain, assumed as such by the great majority of citizens. According to Law 18/1987 of October 7, which establishes the National Day of Spain on October 12, it symbolizes the historic event in which Spain, on the verge of concluding a process of building a State based on their cultural and political plurality and the integration of the Kingdoms of Spain into a single Monarchy, begins a period of linguistic and cultural projection beyond European borders.
