The Congress approved the Spanish Amnesty Law by 178 in favor and 172 against
The law will be sent to the Senate

The Plenary Session of Congress - the Upper House of the Spanish Parliament - approved this Thursday the new opinion prepared by the Justice Commission regarding the proposal for the Organic Amnesty Law for institutional, political and social normalization in Catalonia, by 178 votes in favor and 172 against. The text will be sent to the Senate to continue its parliamentary processing.
This bill, at the initiative of the Socialist Group, began its processing on December 12 with its consideration by the Plenary Session of Congress. On January 10, in an extraordinary session, the Plenary rejected the alternative texts presented by the far-right parliamentary groups Vox and the conservative Popular Group. Once the deadline for submitting amendments to the text had expired, the panel created within the Justice Commission to process this reform met on January 18 to issue its report which, along with the amendments presented, was debated in committee on January 23.
The opinion of the Justice Commission and the amendments that the parliamentary groups kept alive for their defense in a plenary session were debated in the Plenary Session of the Congress of Deputies on January 30. In this session, the amendments were rejected and the opinion was approved by 177 votes in favor and 172 against. However, in the final overall vote, required for the approval of the organic laws, the result was 171 votes in favor and 179 against.
Since the absolute majority required in said vote was not achieved, the text was sent again to the Justice Commission. The Commission approved the new opinion on March 7 by 20 votes in favor and 17 votes against, and in the plenary session this Thursday it reached the required absolute majority, so its processing will continue in the Senate.
