Historic Shifting of the Direction of River Indus - 30 Nov 2023
An important milestone in the history of Pakistan is going to be crossed on November 30 when the Great Indus River, 40 km below Chilas, will be diverted from the site of the Diamir Bhasha Dam. The river will rejoin its original route downstream through a kilometer-long tunnel and an 800-meter-long canal. It is a matter of great pleasure that WAPDA is completing this milestone on time.

The Diamir Bhasha Dam will not only store 8.1 million acre feet of flood water but will also generate 18 billion additional units of electricity annually from a 4,500 MW power plant and irrigate more than one million acres of land.
At present, Pakistan's major dams (Mangla, Tarbela and Gomelzam reservoirs) have a storage capacity of about 14.28 million acre feet of water, while Pakistan has two major reservoirs, Mohmand Dam (1.239 m acre feet) and Diamer Bhasha Dam. (8.1 million acre feet) is being constructed after which Pakistan's total water storage capacity will be 23.58 million acre feet which has been continuously decreasing for the last forty years.
By diverting the river, the construction areas of Diamir Bhasha Dam will become dry and work will become easier. Diamir Bhasha Dam will be completed in 2028 Inshallah.

On 13 May 2020, the Imran Khan government signed a Rs 442 billion contract with China Power and the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) joint venture for the construction of the dam.
The eight million acre feet (MAF) reservoir with a height of 272 meters will be the tallest roller compact concrete (RCC) dam in the world. After its launch in 1998, it was shut down after it was transported to London.
However, Imran Khan's government issued Pakistan's first green bond and sukuk bond in 2021 to address these financial challenges. was subscribed which was ready for over-investment, raising $500 million to finance the Diamir Bhasha Dam project.
Today, when it will be announced, every practical work maker will be in jail.
