Pedro Sánchez accepts the royal commission to form a Government

USPA NEWS - On September 29, the President of the Congress of Deputies, the Lower House of the Spanish Parliament, Francine Armengol, officially informed the King that, after the two scheduled votes had been held, the candidate proposed by Felipe VI on August 22 was not obtained the confidence of the House. Due to this, the King called new consultations in accordance with the provisions of article 99.1 of the Spanish Constitution for October 2 and 3.

This Tuesday the new consultations carried out by the King with the representatives of the political groups with parliamentary representation concluded. The last were the socialist candidate for re-election, Pedro Sánchez, and the conservative leader who did not obtain the confidence of Parliament to be named Prime Minister, Alberto Núñez Feijoo. After interviews with the representatives of the political parties with parliamentary representation, King Felipe VI announced this Tuesday his nomination of the socialist candidate, Pedro Sánchez. The current acting Prime Minister later indicated that he accepts the King's nomination and will initiate contacts with all political parties, except the far-right Vox, seeking agreements that give stability to the legislature. He made no mention of a possible amnesty for Catalan independence leaders convicted of the 2017 secessionist attempt, although he assured that he will govern within constitutional limits.

His opponent, a conservative candidate who lost both investiture votes, Alberto Núñez Feijoo, also appeared before the Press and was in favor of repeating the elections before allowing the formation of a puppet government of the Catalan and Basque independentists. The elections will be repeated if there is no Prime Minister elected on November 27. And the fact is that, today, Pedro Sánchez does not have the necessary support to be elected president of the Spanish Government.

King Felipe VI transferred his proposal to the President of the Congress of Deputies. The proposed candidate – just as the conservative leader did – will present to the Congress of Deputies the political program of the Government that he intends to form and will request the confidence of the Chamber, constitutionally corresponding to the Congress of Deputies to decide whether, based on the above, grants or denies confidence to the proposed candidate. The President of the Congress of Deputies will inform the King of the results of the voting for this second candidate proposal for the Presidency of the Government.
