Mary Soames, Winston Churchill;s last surviving child, dead at 91

USPA News - Mary Soames, the last surviving child of Britain`s World War II prime minister Winston Churchill, died at her home in London on Saturday after suffering a short illness, her family said on Sunday. She was 91 years old.

Soames died peacefully on Saturday evening while surrounded by her family at her home in west London, said her eldest son, Conservative member of parliament Nicholas Soames. Her family said Soames had been suffering from an illness for a short time, but details of the illness were not made public. British Prime Minister David Cameron paid tribute to Soames, describing her as a "wonderful, warm-hearted woman" who could always put others at ease. "We remember that she served her country in World War II and was an eyewitness to some of the most important moments in our recent history as she accompanied her father to key conferences," he said. Soames was the youngest child of Churchill, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century. Churchill, twice serving as prime minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the 1940s and 1950s, led Allied forces during their finest hour and his state funeral in 1965 saw the largest gathering of world dignitaries ever assembled.
