BREAKING NEWS: URGENT -- Mobile messaging app WhatsApp hit by outage

A large number of users of the popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp were unable to sent or receive messages on Saturday afternoon, the second outage to hit WhatsApp after it was bought by Facebook earlier this week in a massive $19 billion deal. The problems began at around 2 p.m.
EST (11 a.m. PST) on Saturday when users across multiple platforms and from numerous countries reported being unable to sent or receive messages. Representatives from neither WhatsApp nor Facebook immediately responded to questions about the problems. On late Friday evening, WhatsApp was affected by a brief outage that lasted approximately 20 minutes, but no details were released about the cause. The problems come just days after Facebook announced it had reached a definitive agreement to acquire WhatsApp for a total of approximately $19 billion in cash and stock, making it the largest-ever purchase of a company backed by venture capital. WhatsApp has more than 450 million users each month, of whom some 70 percent is active daily.
